Today, nearly half of the estimated 1.2 million Americans living with HIV are black. Almost half of the 58,000 new HIV cases each year are are reported in black Americans, and each year, roughly half of the Americans whose deaths are AIDS-related are black.
Last year, HIV was more prevalent in Washington, D.C., than in many African countries, including Rwanda, Ethiopia and the Congo.
